Joe Eberts

Secretary

Joe is a passionate innovator and collaborator with a deep-rooted commitment to the culture of making. His journey into the world of making began during his formative years, in Cub Scouts building pinewood derby cars and a homemade wood steam-bending box. Joe attended a small parochial high school where a trade vocation path was not available. He worked for a summer as a Carpenter’s Assistant and another as an apprentice to a Master Cabinet Maker. He quickly became enamored with the idea of hands-on learning and collaborative creativity. Fueled by this passion, Joe searched for like-minded hands-on people to build a makerspace community. Imagine a fostering hub where students, professionals, and do-it-yourselfers could explore their ideas through discussion, feedback, prototyping, and experimentation.

He has created prototypes of Disney, Warner Bros, and Sesame St. characters for major toy companies. Early in his career and working at Chicago toy development studios, John would make sculptures in clay and wax, a labor intensive process. About 20 years ago, John started working with 3D modeling, 3D scanning and 3D printing to make prototypes of new toy products, a methodology which has substantially reduced the sculpting time and increased productivity.
